Forest Birds – A new Beginning
Posted in:
I hope you noticed the change in the image slider when you landed on this page today. The change is significant in terms of the category of birds that I chose to showcase today. Over the past few years, I had concentrated a lot on waterfowl/waders and to some extent, raptors as well, resulting in a lacunae of sorts in my portfolio when it came to ‘Forest/Hill Birds’.
A couple of my friends used to send back messages requesting me to take a plunge into the hill world as well, and I am glad that I heeded to their advice. The past winter saw me make multiple trips to myriad places spanning from the Rann in Kutch to the Mountains in Kumaon. I came back with a nice mix of a variety of birds.
The slider above and the sample alongside are a few from a lot of images made during my travels to the Hill Country this past winter.I hope you guys will keep visiting my website and Facebook Page to keep a track of these and a lot many more images that are to come soon…

Birds
This one is for all those who love waders. Here is a Ruff in breeding plumage. I made this image on a golden evening in Jamnagar, the best place to shoot waterfowl by far. -

Mammals
Jackal With kill.
While on Safari, it is very important to be aware about where you are positioning the jeep. We saw this chap on the kill and knew that we would be getting a good opportunity to make some shots. The positioning on the road was critical to get a good eye level shot with a slightly blurred background (thanks in part to my tele lens). -

Hanuman Langur: Mammals such as the Langur give one enough opportunities in the jungle to make images such as this one. Just keep an eye out for these.
For those interested in the technical details: This one was underexposed by three stops to make sure that only the brightest of spots in the image are rendered on the screen.

Birds
Long Legged Buzzard: Not the most confiding of guys. Having seen a lot of them in the Rann over the past 3 years, I finally got my lucky bird in my last Safari at Rann this season.
